Meera is an opera about fifteenth century Indian saint-poet Meera Bai. The opera is written in the Hindi language, with some of the Arias in their original language (Brajbasha, Gujarati, etc.) and the vocal lines include some elements of traditional indian singing, and some elements of western classical opera. The instrumentation, while still in flux, will be a chamber ensemble comprised of both eastern and western instruments.
A scene from Meera was workshopped at the Yale School of Music in Spring 2011, and the opera continues to evolve as I spend this year in India, studying Hindustani classical singing and exploring the rich culture of this country.
