Reena Esmail

Composer

Two Tones (tenor+cello)

July 7, 2007 by

Program Notes

It is difficult for me to find something insightful to say about a piece that is so close to my heart. I think Rilke’s text says it best.

Recording

This is a recording of the original version of Two Tones, for soprano, violin and piano. The tenor/cello version has not been recorded yet.

Two Tones
Sherezade Panthaki, soprano; Hyewon Kim, violin; David Fung, piano
recorded at CSMT, Yale School of Music – 12.4.2009

Text

Everything that touches us, me and you,
Takes us together like a violin’s bow
Which draws one voice out of two separate strings
Upon what instrument are we two spanned?
And what musician holds us in his hand?

Premiere/Performances

This piece was premiered in April 2011 at Yale University, in New Haven CT.
