Mary Elizabeth Bowden, trumpet; Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra, Allen Tinkham, conductor
Program Notes
This version of Rosa de Sal for trumpet and orchestra is an arrangement of my original setting for soprano and piano of Pablo Neruda’s Sonnet 17 in the original Spanish. It conjures up the dark, evocative language of Neruda, that touches on the unspoken and unnamable aspects of love, using the constantly shifting tonality of the Hindustani raag, Puriya Dhanashree.
The original poem and translation is available here.

Press/Reviews
Reena Esmail’s “Rosa de Sal,” inspired by Pablo Neruda’s Sonnet XVII, explores the fusion of Western and Eastern musical traditions. Bowden’s trumpet navigates the Hindustani raag of Puriya Dhanashree with elegance and depth, while the CYSO provides a rich, textured backdrop that enhances the piece’s emotional resonance. — Illiam sebitz five finger review
