one word makes a world

This is a new work, written for cellist Yoshi Masuda. It is an elaboration on the cello solo in movement 3 of my String Quartet (Ragamala). The music for this work will be released along with his new album in 2024.

Program Notes

one word makes a world emerged from the cello solo in the third movement of my 2013 String Quartet (Ragamala). The piece is essentially a cello recitative, where each phrase ventures out into an unknown tonal space, and is then met there by the piano. The phrases are rooted in Raag Basant (p/d) and venture outward from there.

There are so many times where we have to take a leap into the unknown — and we can only hope that our feet will land on solid ground, that our song will be met with a harmonious accompaniment at just the right moment, that our words will be met with a forgiving and generative response.

A word is nothing without context. But that same word, met with understanding, with dialogue, with counterpoint, can make a world.
